How long can an auto repair shop take to repair vehicle?

I was just speaking with my grandfather and learned that he has had his pick-up being worked on at a shop for almost 14 months! This is just ridiculous! I feel like he is being taken advantage of because of his easy going nature and his age.
He said he took it in to have the carb worked on and it has since turned into a nightmare for the mechanic. Still, it's a 1980's Mazda. There is no way it should take this long.
He's been without his pick-up for over a year! I feel like they should not only fix it for free but pay him for lost usage of his vehicle that he has been making insurance and registration payments on.

WOW that is ridiculous i have let vehicle sit for like a couple days when i didn't want to work on them but never more that that. sounds like to me the repair shop just doesn't want to repair it. you might contact the better business bureau in your area or maybe the state attorney general you might also be surprised how much the AARP can get done. or just find someone that wants to fix it and knows what customer service is and just go get it might take a tow truck but 14 mo. that is unheard of
